HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS TERMINAL SERVER 2008 SOFTWAREUsing any component of this technology requires an RDS CAL license for each user or device used to access the server remotely.Ĭomponents of a Microsoft Office suite may vary per software product edition. Other users in the organization may also access and use the copy of software installed on a desktop from other separately licensed devices.Įxamples of remote access technology used with Microsoft Office licensed as a desktop application include Remote Desktop Services (RDS) as part of Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution. When a copy of Microsoft Office is installed on a desktop, the primary user of the desktop may remotely access and use the software from any other device. When a copy of Microsoft Office software is installed on a server, users may remotely access and use the copy of Microsoft Office from any licensed device. Remote Use Rights are granted under desktop application licenses for Microsoft Office acquired through Microsoft Volume Licensing. With Remote Use Rights, a company may install Microsoft Office on a single device such as a server and then allow users to access Microsoft Office remotely from licensed desktops (or as the primary user of the licensed device hosting the session) as if the desktop application was installed locally on their desktops. See more detail in the Remote Access for Microsoft Office section. This includes situations where you run the software on your local device or access the software installed on another device like a server. Volume Licensing customers have the right to install and use any number of copies of the software on the licensed device on physical and/or virtual machines.Ĭustomers may access Microsoft Office remotely, but one license is required for each physical device running or accessing the application. The license permits use of the software on the licensed device. Users must assign each Microsoft Office license to a single physical hardware system (“licensed device”). Microsoft Office as a software offering under the desktop applications licensing model is licensed on a “per device” basis. Text Per Device Microsoft Office Licensing HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS TERMINAL SERVER 2008 PROIn my example above you would only need 350 subscriptions to an Office 365 plan that includes Office Pro Plus (E3, E5, ProPlus). Office 365 subscription licensing on the other hand, is per user. If you have 400 PCs that will access a single terminal server and use VL Office on it you need 400 VL Office licenses. As I mentioned before, standalone Office licenses are per device and in the case of remote access the server does not need a license, only the accessing device. This is a legal issue, not a technical one. Even if you can't install the Office applications directly, it still needs licensing. The fact that you use a thin client does not change the licensing requirements for Office. If u so bloody scribe the whole infrastructure !!!!Īt the command prompt, type change user /install, and then press ENTER. Its a VM which is a TERMINAL server on a hyper-v host ? So now it is wrong to ask OP to confirm ? Sometimes people like u really make people hate this site !!! The Server 2019 can be the hyper-V feature also ? Easier to migrate VMs right ? "Hosted Hyper V Server 2008 Terminal Server".so this would mean a VM ? What OS is the VM (or Terminal Server). You seem to assume that OP infrastructure is based on what you think it is ? There were some known issues and recommended was Server 2012 or later RDS (newer name for TS) Then I not asking about licenses but on O365 known issues with server 2008 Terminal Servers. reason why people not use lappy with win10 to use on rds ot TS or VDI environments. Not always need to use a windows machine to access TS or VDI.you can use thin clients as well. Retail versions of office don't count, must be VL or subscription. You cannot mix and match O365 and VL licensing. The same Office product must be installed on the local and remote machines. You don't need a license for the remote machine or server, only for the local PC.Office licensing for remote access/desktop scenarios is per accessing device and only for Office ProPlus (VL or subscription). You should be installing MS Office 2016 or MS Office 2019 on Terminal Servers (and remember to activate Terminal services mode before installing and the execute the terminal services mode after installing).Īdrian_ych, I just want to clear something up. Then why O365 in Terminal server, especially server 2012 or earlier ? Are you installing it on the server host or onto a VM ? ![]()
